Have Experts Finally Discovered What Happened to the The Lost Colony of Roanoke?

A local expert believes they have dug up evidence and solved the mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke. In the late 16th century, 115 people disappeared and it has since been a mystery of what happened to them puzzling historians for years.

The Roanoke Colony refers to two attempts by Sir Walter Raleigh to found the first permanent English settlement in North America. The first colony was established by governor Ralph Lane in 1585 on Roanoke Island in what is now Dare County, North Carolina, United States. Following the failure of the 1585 settlement, a second colony led by John White landed on the same island in 1587, and became known as the Lost Colony due to the unexplained disappearance of its population – Wikipedia

Scott Dawson, an EMT, and amateur archaeologist believes the colonists may have travelled to Hatteras Island after abandoning their new home, only he needs to prove it. In 2009 he and Mark Horton from the University of Bristol began exploring the area and Horton stated to the Daily Mail that “massive political eruptions and disagreements and people walking out and things” probably followed on Roanoke fell, leading to social splintering. “I’m pretty confident one group at least, probably the pretty substantial par, came out to Hatteras Island.”

At the beginning of 2013, Dawson, Horton, and their team started to dig through the layers and began to find evidence to prove their theory when they recovered thousands of items from the island, most of which were from the Croatoan tribe, but within their discovery, they found items that could be connected to the Lost Colony including an iron rapier and writing slates. When speaking to a local news outlet, The Outer Banks Voice, Dawson said “As much as I believed the colony went down to Hatteras, I never actually thought we were going to find it, I can’t believe we found what we found. It’s kind of surreal…We not only found evidence of mixed architecture of houses but also metallurgy, where they had blacksmith shops and were also working in copper and lead, and this continued right on into the 1600s. It’s hard to say how many, but a few dozen at least lived for a few decades down there in the villages and continued to work in metals.”

The team believes they have located what is left of the Lost Colony after they arrived on Hatteras and where they then integrated into the Croatoan tribe. After more than a decade the team had planned an archaeological dig, which was scheduled for this year to confirm whether or not Horton and Dawson’s analysis was correct, but with the outbreak of coronavirus, the excavation will be delayed until 2021.

Have you, like us, been waiting patiently for the final installment of the Fae trilogy to come out? Well, it looks like we could be in for a Christmas treat. CJ Abedi tweeted a short while ago that we can expect book 3 in time for the holidays. We are really excited as well as slightly sad that this is the final book.The ladies left us with this teaser in the form of a verse from Lord Byron.

Exclusive: Colet and Jasmine Answer Questions about the Fae Trilogy

We asked the authors of our favourite book series a few questions. Read on to see what they had to say.

Have you visited Roanoke and all the places you mention in the books?

Unfortunately we have not yet visited Roanoke.

COLET: I have visited the Hill of Tara, Stone of Destiny, New Grange, etc. It is the most magical place in all the world. I am in love with Ireland and cannot wait to get back there and hug that stone! I feel like it made a lot of our dreams come true. There is TOTAL magik up on that Hill of Tara.

Did you have the trilogy mapped out from the beginning?

We had the trilogy mapped out from the moment we started writing. We knew what we’d call each book in the trilogy and we basically knew what would happen as well.

Has anything changed?

There have been some changes along the way, we believe definite improvements but overall the story is what we envisioned it would be from the beginning.

Is Katya gone for good?

Poor Katya. Imagine being completely in love with someone that despises everything you stand for… no she is not gone for good. J She will reappear in book 3 but there will definitely be some twists with her character.

Did you deliberately set out to write a YA novel?

Yes, we really wanted to write the story of Devilyn and Caroline and we wanted it to be accessible to all age groups. There is an innocence that you get to keep when writing YA that is romantic and just leaves a lot to the viewers imagination.

 Have you ever disagreed on how the story will progress?

LOL! All the time! We are writing this trilogy together AND we are sisters. We’re both also stubborn with strong opinions so we argue over stuff all the time but in the end we always do what’s best for Devilyn and Caroline.

What plans do you have for when Fae is finished. Any more YA ideas for the future?

We’re both working on solo projects that we’re excited about but if something comes up who knows?

How old is Devilyn in Fae world terms? (cough cough is he like a certain 108 yr old vampire stuck in a 17 yr old body)?

HA! He’s older than that hunky vampire. His soul is ancient and he was born into FAE form during the period of the Lost Colony.

Have you named book 3?

Yes. J

There is some controversy about fan fiction. Some authors absolutely hate fans continuing their stories, especially taking their YA charcaters into an adult world. Thoughts?

You know, it’s hard to say. But I think we both agree that if you have fans that are that passionate about your characters they’re allowed to play and go to wherever places they want… so I guess we’re cool with it. As YA authors, you’re just lucky if you have fans that love the world you created so much.

Are your characters based on anyone you know/knew?

Not really. When you write you always put in some characteristics of people you know but they are completely imagined.

 How did you go about researching the literary links (at the start of each chapter) and why did you choose the characters you did?

Google is a beautiful thing. What did we do before there was such an amazing search engine??? After we outlined our chapters and knew basically what would happen in each, it was easy to just google different quotes that we thought would be relevant. We also have a big love for Hafiz and Milton’s, Paradise Lost is a favorite for one of us. J

How do you feel knowing that many much older adults are fans of your YA novels?

We love it! We read YA all the time and we are older too. We always wanted our audience to be diverse so it’s a dream come true.

How did a Norse God end up being the psuedo grandfather to Devilyn and Tatiana?

Colet: I have serious obsession with Vikings. I take full responsibility.

About the movie. How are things progressing?

Scott Free has been amazing. They’ve found the writer for the screenplay and she is AWESOME. We hope they’ll make an announcement soon. She is seriously half FAE and totally magikal!

The chapter headers in Fae had us all thinking about the chapters before we had even started the chapter itself.
We decided to look further into the quotes and excerpts from poetry and literature.
Here’s some of our favourites from Fae.

Chapter One

“Fate leads the willing, and drags along the reluctant”

It was written by Seneca the Younger, aka Lucius Annaeus Seneca, a Roman Stoic philosopher and adviser to the Emperor Nero.
Around 300 BC a Greek Stoic philosopher named Cleanthes wrote the poem and around three centuries later, Seneca translated the Greek into Latin.

Chapter Three

Marlowe’s nondramatic work includes the poem Hero and Leander.
This work was incomplete at his death and was extended by George Chapman: the joint work of the two poets was published in 1598.

 

Chapter Nine

Donatien Alphonse François de Sade, better known as the Marquis de Sade was a French aristocrat, revolutionary politician, philosopher and write. His works include novels, short stories, plays, dialogues and political tracts; in his lifetime some were published under his own name, while others appeared anonymously and Sade denied being their author.
Sade was incarcerated in various prisons and in an insane asylum for about 32 years of his life, many of his works were written in prison.

 

Chapter Seventeen

“Deep into the darkness, peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before”
-Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven

Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven” has been frequently referenced and parodied in contemporary culture. Immediately popular after the poem’s publication in 1845, it quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Some consider it the best poem ever written. As such, modern references to the poem continue to appear in popular culture.

The poem is often noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven’s mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man’s slow fall into madness. The lover, often identified as being a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word “Nevermore”. The poem makes use of a number of folk and classical references.

A quote from Devilyn at the beginning of Chapter Eighteen ends the book perfectly.

“No matter how much light lives within me, it cannot encompass the darkness that consumes my soul”

Fae: Book Review

We asked readers of Fae to give a review of the book. We particularly loved this one. Read for youself and see if you agree!

I absolutely loved the book so I hope this gives it justice 🙂

Fae

What can I say ? This book is a such a good read I managed to read through it in just over 48hrs; impressive because I am currently on maternity leave with my six month old whilst also having a 3 year old and a husband and a boat load of housework !!.

The story between Caroline and Devilyn is just like your typical teenage romance but with a fantastic majik twist 🙂

Caroline is your typical bookworm character who’s life is turned upside down by a history project and a stunningly handsome boy Devilyn.

Devilyn is your stunningly handsome and talented jock with a twist. He is tasked with bringing together the light and the dark but can he do it ? Or will the darkness inside him win and will his fate with Caroline be lost forever ? (I hope not)

As you progress through the book you read typical scenarios that any teenager goes though, liking someone but do they like me back, rejection, popularity. The way in which the authors wrote the book it doesn’t feel at all cliche or done before because you get so wrapped up in the characters and their impending fate. You need these throwbacks to reality in order to relate to them and they help keep the story current although they’re are a lot of references to Greek mythology and Gods.

In other series of books I’ve read it has been completely one sided and your left wondering what the other character is feeling but C & J Abedi have written it from both Caroline’s and Devilyn’s point of view allowing you to engage with both and willing them on, to each other.

The power struggle between light and dark is a main storyline in the book with one winning at the end of this book but throughout you do question which is going to win overall, which makes it interesting and gripping.

The ending is a cliff hanger that will leave you wanting so much more and praying that it doesn’t end there……. Which it doesn’t because May 2014 book 2 comes out and even the synopsis of that will give you a clue 😉

So overall a fantastic read for all ages to relate to and a book that will leave you wanting more. A love story that is finally written without all the perfectness; it has flaws and holes like every romance but will it be the romance to unite dark and light or will darkness take over :/
